Le vieillissement de la population signifie également un nombre croissant de personnes dans le soi-disant quatrième âge : l'expérience combinant la vieillesse avec un certain degré d'incapacité et la nécessité de recevoir des soins. Alors que certains auteurs identifient le quatrième âge avec la mort sociale, en parlant de l'impossibilité de la recherche empirique, notre article présente une interprétation des récits des personnes âgées concernant les changements dans leur quotidien par rapport à la transition vers cette période, montrant comment une telle interprétation est liée à leur perception de soi et leur identité
