How can the impact of new forms of mediatization of politics on the functioning of democracies be studied? First, by calling into question an automatism, a communicational episteme consisting of nostalgia for a golden age of rational democracy, a technicist perception of the media which cuts them off from their social conditions of functioning, and an often careless celebration of the power of "opinion". Secondly, by trying to grasp the recomposition of a field of forces characterized by the growing (and ambiguous) emancipation of mediators, the autarchic dynamics of the political field, and the inhibitory effects of surveys on certain political standpoints. Even if the sociological approach is of little use in reinforcing the edifying discourse of the "democracy of opinion", it does help to define the new relations of interdependence within the political field, and to identify how the media can open areas of participation and counter-authority
