Within a general economy of computerized networks, computer aided production management (CPM) presents several peculiarities, as it is neither classical computerizing of existing manual tasks, nor a simple communicating network. CPM has been built upon a pre-established model of manufacturing, which is therefore promoted as a «managerial paradigm» for a large number of industries; a model considered as an answer to problems arising from the increase of variety in manufactured goods, a general trend in economics since the beginning of the seventies. CPM has been largely implemented; but it has always been a long and difficult process. The main cause relies on the fact that CPM is a vehicle for strong integration and consistency in firms where conflicts and discrepancies were the usual way of life. As it is both a nervous system and network of organs, CPM calls for new regulations which bring strong changes in «white collar» work roles inside industrial firms. The analysis of CPM adoption leads for these reasons to a better understanding of recent economic changes
