PTSD and Coping Strategies Among Palestinian University Students During Political Violence

Despite ongoing political violence in Palestine, little is known about how these conflicts have impacted Palestinian undergraduate students’ mental health and coping strategies. This study sought to determine the prevalence of PTSD and coping mechanisms among Palestinian university students during the current period of political violence in Palestine. A crosssectional design was used with a sample of students from three Palestinian universities. Data were gathered by Brief COPE scale and the PCL5 scale. The associations between research variables and PTSD were investigated. In total, 1815 students were recruited. The prevalence of PTSD symptoms was estimated at 65.9 percent. The findings revealed links between PTSD symptoms and being a female student, living in northern Palestine, experiencing worsened psychological well-being during ongoing political violence, and having a history of traumatic or stressful events. Furthermore, the findings revealed significant associations between PTSD symptoms and the use of self-blame, venting, and denial as coping strategies. The use of coping strategies may predict the development of PTSD symptoms. Therefore, it is critical to provide immediate assistance to university students affected by political violence and wars in order to help them rebuild their mental health and effectively manage the challenges and hardships they face
