If the history of Haiti since its independence remains difficult to understand and interpret, it is because we have few means of comprehending the development of a peasant society of largely African origin that attained independence before becoming "Creolized " in Santo Domingo. These " Africans, " as they were called by the native born Créole slaves, passed directly from slavery to independence, having been spared the curse of being born into the hell of plantations. After 1804, the new masters in the country in a neo-colonial manner tried to dominate this large group of Africans. This provoked a rejection by the " bossales " of the plantation and a graduai triumph of small property, with the development, little by little of a truly ' indigenous culture " which would not cease to counterbalance the most westernized culture of the elite
