Travis Sutton Byrd's excellent book about union struggles in the early 1930s will undoubtedly interest labor and southern historians, promising to stimulate productive discussions about trade union and official politics, the region's political economy, and class tensions. Byrd offers highly detailed, blow-by-blow accounts of numerous high-stakes labor conflicts involving the United Textile Workers of America and the communist National Textile Workers Union. He describes the various participants: labor heads, communists, bosses, religious leaders, local and national politicians, government bureaucrats, and rank-and-file unionists. Byrd has most sympathy for local laborers, who, in his telling, repeatedly demonstrated a regionally based class consciousness; rank-and-filers developed a fighting spirt without assistance from outsiders, including New Dealers, American Federation of Labor leaders, and communists. Byrd does a first-rate job of delineating the dreadful working and living conditions in the textile communities of Georgia, Virginia, and the Carolinas.
