Art and Architecture

Although Marx himself had relatively little to say about art, there emerged from the general thrust of his ideas a conception of art that has continued to be influential and even prominent. This places art somewhere between ‘science’—the recording and explanation of reality—and ‘ideology’—the framework of evaluative ideas that distorts and disguises reality in the economic and power interests of a ruling class. On this conception, art, unlike ideology, enjoys a certain autonomy from the political process, and unlike science, it is not confined to passively mapping the way the world is. Art's autonomy enables it to envisage possibilities in a way that can disclose a critical distance between the world as it is and the world as it might be. Of course, not all art does this. Indeed, very often an historical narrative accompanies this Marxist conception according to which art has only recently secured significant freedom from the patronage of the powerful and the wealthy (or their ecclesiastical collaborators). But this autonomy is fragile. It is still necessary for the artist to be vigilant, to assert artistic freedom in the face of pressures to social conformity and the lure of capitalist economics
