Organizational Homogeneity, Growth, and Conflict in Brazilian Protestantism

Although Weber identified several kinds of legitimate authority, organization theory has implicitly accepted the rational-legal variety as the only basis for the formation and maintenance offormal organizations. This paper analyzes three kinds of Brazilian Protestant churches based upon rational-legal, clientelist, and patriarchal authority. Because each form of authority supports important social institutions in Brazil, churches are heavily influenced by the symbolism associated with the kind of authority they use. This leads to a situation in which the performance of Protestant churches (reflected in their growth, homogeneity, and conflict levels) is more the result of the symbolic overtones of organizational forms than the inherent administrative efficacy of a given form
