A collective behavior approach is employed to study crowds that gathered nightly in Royal Oak, Michigan, where an image of the Virgin Mary was reported to appear on the wall of a church. The crowd milieu is described as well as the specialized roles that emerged among the viewers at varying stages of the growth and then demise of the crowds. Though local religious sightings may attract large numbers of believers, their lifespans are limited in the absence of a leader, prophet, or message
