An Organizing Female with a Briefcase

Barbara Frances Adam Wootton (1897–1988), Baroness Wootton of Abinger, was born into an academic family and was educated at Girton College, Cambridge, where she won First Class honours and a research scholarship to the London School of Economics before returning to Girton where she lectured during the First World War. She left Cambridge for London and labour socialist politics in the early 1920s. This article analyses her economic and political argument during the inter‐war period, particularly with regard to questions of full employment, a planned economy and her work for an internationalist polity, a Federal Union of nation states. Her ideas were intrinsic to a democratic socialist plan for social justice resonant in Labour’s social welfare policies of the post‐war period. Her internationalist activities anticipated the creation of the European Economic Community and the European Union
