Anonymity and urban space. (Pierre Sansot, p.62-76) Having perused a number of books written by sociologists and novelists, Pierre Sansot wonders about "the notion of anonymity which is usually ignored, doubtless because there seems to be nothing to say about it, because it passes as a purely negative notion". The writer, on the contrary, proposes to demonstrate that it is a basically positive notion and, particularly, that it lends itself to any number of variances. The ingrained prejudice that puts anonymity, this modern disease of the megapolis, on the mythical side of evil should be questioned : "Anonymity may mean positivity as much as it may mean negativity ; anonymous living is as much a dimension of human existence as a singular and hardworking life ; it could mean the return of the repressed thoughts or the emergence of a creative adventure." An analysis of extreme situations, - "at the front" - or of situations "in a crowd", in a stadium, a railway station, a cinema, prompts one to state that anonymous living is not an inferior degree of existence but one of its irreplaceable forms. "In a number of circumstances anonymity would imply communication in a relationship that involves individuals and the city." A reflection on crime will help to specify the outline of urban anonymity, fort is'nt it alleged that urban anonymity is the condition for crime ? But the latter also removes the illusion of anonymity ; the effect of crime is to make a territory anonymous (tracking down, hiding ) ; but "justice was then done to the most anonymous areas, and any ordinary face could hope for the glamour of photo flashes
