Overcoming poverty and respecting human rights

Experience of worldwide trends shows that, even with similar resources, different nations make different progress in overcoming poverty and promoting human rights. It is in fact the quality of public policy and politics that makes all the difference. Since governance deficits impinge on human development and respect for human rights, all efforts which lead to "good governance" are a constructive approach towards overcoming poverty within a human rights framework. It follows that the quality of life of the great majority of people in a country will only show a lasting improvement in a setting both of economic and social development and of political stability. Undoubtedly, practical implementation of good governance encounters numerous obstacles, but it is a lack of wisdom and political will rather than knowledge of what needs to be done that perpetuates the problems of the age
