Dichotomous constructions of human society have by now become traditional. The continuum hypothesis which differentiates societies based on structural levels has replaced the notion of a dichotomy. An attempt is made to examine the applicability of rural-urban continuum in the Indian context. A number of criticisms already levelled against the continuum hypothesis are further reinforced through this examination. It is argued that the unilinear dependence on quantitative or qualitative factors for categorizing communities into rural or urban is unrewarding. A trichotomous typology, which is capable of meeting several of the criticisms against the continuum, is suggested. In order to understand the change of society from one type to another, the 'core institutional order' of the society needs to be located. It is maintained that the core institutional order differs from society to society. A society could be viewed as changed and moving from one type to another when its core institutional order changes.RÉSUMÉLes schémas dichotomiques de la société humaine sont maintenant devenus traditionnels.
