Thomas Reid on Adam Smith's Theory of Morals

1. Given respect which Thomas Reid evinced for Adam Smith and Theory of Moral Sentiments (TMS), and care which Reid's work generally shows, suggestion that Reid in his lectures revealed himself a careless expositor and critic of Smith is surprising.' Further, there is good evidence that Reid did not enter lightly upon treatment of Smith's theory. In a lined-out passage from his lecture notes for February 19, 1765, Reid complains cautiously (And here I cannot help differing from ingenious Dr. Smith . . .) that his predecessor had regarded the question concerning principle of approbation as of the greatest importance in Speculation [but] of none in Practice.2 Always very concerned for impressionable young scholars before him, Reid was reluctant to leave uncriticized views which might be pernicious in their effect and at same time was reluctant to appear as critic of eminent and reputable philosopher who may have lectured before some of same auditors only year before
