Islamic sociabilite and political expression in Turkey the new Vakifs The vakif (from the Arab waqf, foundation) is one of the few Ottoman institutions which resisted the shocks of the Jacobine Kemalist revolution. After many years of lethargy, it was reformed starting in 1967 through legislation and became again a factor of mobilization and sociability used by all sec tors of society, including the Islamists. Whether Islamist " research " structures, organizations sheltering brotherhoods, religions groups or antichambers of political parties, the Islamists vakifs all have one basic common point : bottom-up re-Islamization. As they are already largely politicized, one may wonder if, given the social-democrats' and thé libérals' inability to propose a credible societal project, these organizations are not effective means of preparing the conquest of power
