Conservation and Stock Reduction on the Navajo Tribal Range

T I HE Navajo country in northeastern Arizona (Fig. 1), 92 per cent of which is desert and steppe, is an area in delicate physical balance. As in -many other semiarid areas of the world, a few tenths of an inch of precipitation can vastly change the appearance of the land. Within this setting are placed an enormous livestock load and a dense Indian population. The repercussions of such a situation are generally destructive both to the land and to the people. This paper analyzes the livestock-reduction program instituted by the government in the 1930's as a conservation measure, with reference to some of the human problems incurred
