HAT was the course followed by Magellan between the strait that now bears his name and the Philippine Islands? As usually described and plotted on modern maps this course ran northward along the west coast of South America for a relatively short distance; at about latitude 320 S. it turned out into the open ocean and made directly for the Philippines in a west-northwesterly direction. The writer believes that such a route is improbable and that the navigator, before turning westward, proceeded much farther north than has hitherto been supposed (Fig. I).
