T HE pig, Cavia porcellus L., is a small rodent of South American origin, still kept by the native Indians of the Central Andes, and is one of only three mammals to have been domesticated in the New World. Together with the llama, alpaca, dog, and Muscovy duck, the pig, known to man for at least three thousand years, was part of the domesticatedanimal complex of the ancient inhabitants of Peru and surrounding highland areas. Grossly misnamed, it is not a member of the pig family, neither is it from Guinea. Among the Quechua-speaking people of the Central Andes it is called cuy, a name that might well be adopted into Western languages in view of the inaccuracies implied by the English guinea pig
