The Economic Development of the Outer Provinces of the Netherlands Indies

O F all the islands of the Malay Archipelago, has received most attention, and rightly so, since it is doubtless the most significant part of the East Indies.' The special position of is also recognized in the official statistics, which always differentiate Java and Madura (the small island off the east coast of Java) and the Provinces. The terminology suggests a principal contrast between the core and the periphery and carries a connotation that the latter is inferior to the former. No doubt contrasts exist; however, the last thirty or forty years have witnessed a remarkable development of parts of the Outer Provinces, which has erased the once sharp distinction between central and marginal regions
