Irish Temperance and US Anti-Slavery

In 1841 Charles Lenox Remond, then the most influential black American abolitionist, held a series of successful antislavery meetings in Ireland, assisted by Irish abolitionists like Richard Allen, James Haughton and the Webbs. He also helped compose an address from the Irish in Ireland to the Irish in America, condemning the evils of slavery and encouraging Irish Americans to do all in their power to oppose it. Irish Americans should support the abolitionists, the Irish Address continued, and treat the coloured population as their equals, bringing honour to the name of Ireland by doing so.2 Towards the end of the year Allen wrote to the abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison in Boston to say that Daniel O'Connell's name headed that of the thousands eager to sign the Address. Many of the Catholic clergy had signed, but not Father Mathew, perhaps the best known Irishman next to O'Connell at the time because of the success of his temperance crusade, then at its peak. Though he had not yet signed the Address, Mathew had unwillingly given autographs for the annual Boston Antislavery Bazaar, an unwillingness that Allen attributed to modesty.3 But Mathew's signature was on the Address when it reached Boston early the following year.
