Theoretical Gains From the Study of Bilingualism

The problem of gaining insights into the young child's emerging linguistic competencies has been examined within the field of child language in several ways. The most common studies have been those examining the normal child, in her normal environment, typically interacting with a familiar adult. This study suggests that crucial insights may be gained through an examination of the child's linguistic abilities in cognitively-demanding situations during which one can observe the limitations placed upon the child's abilities at a given time in development. Our claim is illustrated by a case study that concerns the meta-linguistic abilities of a bilingual two-year old learning Hebrew and English simultaneously
