How should African Americans confront their legacy, their heritage of struggle and survival? Heralded after its 1986 Off-Broadway debut as a bold new voice in black theatre' The Colored Museum ponders this critical question. Playwright George C. Wolfe wraps his answer in contradiction and paradox, as The Colored Museum simultaneously celebrates, satirizes and subverts the African-American legacy. Wolfe calls his play both, an exorcism and a party.2 The Colored Museum explores contemporary African-American cultural identity, while, at the same time revisiting and reexamining the African-American theatrical and cultural past. According to Wolfe the legacy of the past must be both embraced and overcome
