Soil Survey Procedures in Land Development Planning

In feasibility and development surveys, the use made of a soil survey is less than its potential. This is in part because soil surveys do not supply the infor? mation necessary for economic analysis and planning decisions. To remedy this situation, proportionately less time in a soil survey should be allotted to soil mapping, and more to activities directed towards land evaluation. Crop yield estimates for each soil type are required, to obtain which involves soil inspection visits outside the survey area. Estimates of soil response to changes in land-use should be made. The limitations of soil maps are reviewed. The terms of reference of soil surveys should allow for variations in scale and intensity of survey as work progresses. There needs to be a greater variety and flexibility in the activities carried out in the course of soil survey
