Some Linear Earthworks in the Danube Basin

Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Romania, and it is unlikely that any reader of this journal will have an opportunity of visiting them for many years to come. If he should visit any, he will do a service to archaeology in writing even the briefest account, noting especially two things: the terminal points and the direction faced (i.e. on which side of the bank the ditch is). Short of a visit, the ground could be prepared by a clear description of the course, based on the map, and this supplemented by a study of the few published descriptions that may exist. The following notes are a first attempt at supplying the former need. The maps consulted (at the Royal Geographical Society) were those made before the first war by the Austro-Hungarian government. They are on a scale of i : 75,000 and extend over (and beyond) the political limits of the former Austro-Hungarian empire. The area mapped is divided into east-west (hori? zontal) zones numbered in Arabic numerals from north to south, and into north-south (vertical) columns numbered in Roman numerals from west to east. Each sheet is given a name and also a reference by zone and column, and is bounded by parallels and meridians; but as the latter have Ferro and not Greenwich as their point of origin, only the latitudes marking the north and south limits of the sheets are quoted here
