Its gradual transition from a predominantly subsistence economy in the eighteenth century to cash cropping in the post-emancipation period is examined. The pace of modernization has increased in recent years and brought increasing levels of vulnerability to farmers. Similarities are also noted between aspects of Accompong's agrarian system and characteristics of African small-scale agriculture
