SUPPLEMENT TO A SELECTION OF SOME 900 BRITISH AND IRISH MOUNTAIN TOPS and A SELECTION OF 100 TOPS UNDER 2500 FEET. Compiled and arranged by William McKnight Docharty. 2 vols. Edinburgh: The Darien Press, 1962. 934 x 7 inches; 208 and 259 pages; 18 panoramas, numerous plates in text; maps. (Privately printed and circulated.) Mr Docharty's supplement to his original Selection (published in 1954) is a more ambitious work than its parent volume. This indefatigable climber and mountain-lover has enlarged the scope of his lists, adding a supplement to his original 900 tops of under 3000 feet, and a further selection of 1000 tops under 2500 feet. His generous decision to expand his privately printed guide to two volumes has enabled Mr. Docharty to in? clude many more pictures than in his original Selection, among them a number of the Alps, unconnected with the declared subject of the volumes, but serving a purpose in encouraging in others Mr. Docharty's own devotion to the hills. Not only are their eighteen as against nine panoramas, bound into the end of Vol. 2 in handy form for pul? ling out, there are many fine black and white plates, some page size, others folded. Vol. 1 contains an extended version of the author's earlier foreword, and the list; in Vol. 2 Mr. Docharty describes, under the heading of an Epilogue, some of his own experiences on climbing holidays. The accompanying text and the wider choice of illustrations make of Mr. Docharty's new publication a work of greater human interest than the 1954 Selection, without impairing its usefulness as a guide to climbers.
