Chief Academic Officers at Black Colleges and Universities

The chief academic officer (CAO) at a college or university is generally the highest ranking administrative official for academic affairs and directly responsible to the president for matters related to the academic leadership of the institution. The CAO's responsibilities include: budgeting; formulating academic policies and procedures; developing, implementing, and reviewing academic programs; interpreting the educational philosophy and policies of the institution; recruiting, appointing and promoting faculty and academic staff; and planning for the orderly growth and development of the institution. I Women are underrepresented within the ranks of higher-education administrators,2 especially the chief academic officer position.3 The higher up the administrative ladder one goes, the fewer women are found, despite the fact that women represent a sizable proportion of the total population of faculty and staff in highereducation institutions.
