How are we to define « cohabitation » ? What are its characteristics and how does it differ from other modes of shared government ? What are during cohabitation the behaviors and strategies of the partners/adversaries ? Two recent typical cases are compared : the cohabitation between a socialist president and a conservative government in France, 1986-1988, and the cohabitation between the Labor Party and the Likud in the Israeli National Union government, 1984-1988. Whereas these two examples present many common features at the theoretical level, the behavior of the actors seems to have been substantially divergent. An analysis of the governmental cultures of the two countries makes it possible to explain these different practices under circumstances of «forced sharing
