The Instability of Pragmatism

starting point, a limit point within which hegemony does not need to be built and rebuilt to ensure social cohesion. Yet the pragmatist's practices and the poststructuralist's communities, like Hegel's unconscious ethical substance, are not dominated by the sense that defection and fracturing make the rebuilding of hegemony through metaphysical ideas a matter of urgency. Since pragmatism itself cannot avoid the urgency of a defense of democratic liberalism, it is inherently unstable because it is forced to present a metaphysics within which democratic liberalism is feasible. But then the philosophical cycle returns to the abstract and constructivist phase, leaving the historicist and liquidationist phase of pragmatism behind
