This essay argues from a Lacanian perspective that capitalism's current modality promotes a perverted ideal of liberty as an unrestricted acceptance of the prerogatives of the market. The decomposition and decline of the paternal function, a phenomenon through which psychoanalysis condenses the collapse of narrativity structured by normative, moral, religious, and ideological values, has been accompanied by the elimination of limits on which the social state has always relied. Social engineering, based on the calculated and extreme exploitation of man's helplessness, has replaced social and psychological constraints once transmitted through different narrative orders, as generalized human uncertainty is manipulated through the supreme concept of security
