STUDENTS of culture rank religion as one of the most important molders of human values and customs, so it has frequently been used to define culture regions.' It would seem, therefore, that maps of significant religious phenomena in the United States would be valuable not only for their own sake but also as building blocks in the quest to understand the overall character and diversity of American culture
