An Exegesis of Sura Ninety-Eight

The themes of Sura Ninety Eight in themselves contain little that had not been heard before by the companions of the Prophet. Dating from the Medinan period it seems to have served as a kind of summary statement of earlier teachings. It contains an indictment of Medinan Jews and Christians who rejected the bayyina of the Prophet, the clear evidence on the basis of which man chooses obedience or rejection of God. The consequence of such rejection, for the People of the Book as for the kuffdr, is a forfeiting of reward in the hereafter and banishment to eternal fire
