The Agricultural Practices of National Groups in Eighteenth-Century Southeastern Pennsylvania

r IHE farming practices of the Pennsylvania Dutch in the eighteenth century have often been described as superior to those of settlers from the British Isles. Governor George Thomas, Lewis Evans, Benjamin Franklin, and Benjamin Rush, among others, believed that agricultural traditions of national groups were quite distinct. Thomas' said the Germans were responsible for the high productivity of Pennsylvania. Franklin,2 despite his dislike of these Palatine boors, expressed admiration for their habitual industry and frugality, which permitted them to underlive others. Rush, whose Account of the Manners of the German Inhabitants of Pennsylvania3 has been widely quoted, concluded that German farm may be distinguished from the farms of the other citizens . .. by . .. the fertility of their [sic] fields; the luxuriance of their meadows, and a general appearance of plenty and neatness in everything that belongs to them. Among modern commentators, Shryock4 has drawn a sharp distinction between German and British farming traditions, and a new general history of the people of the United States by Handlin5 has helped to nurture the belief.
