A sample of 27 American SMSAs is analyzed by means of spectral methods to determine regional cyclical patterns for the postwar period. The observed spectral statistics in the cyclical frequency band indicate that the severity of regional cycles seem to differ quite widely among regions though regional cycles tend to be national in scope. The observed cyclical patterns are then explained in terms of some well-known hypotheses of regional cycles. The results support the hypothesis that the degree of industrial diversification or specialization has a significant effect on regional cycle behavior. Diversified regions seem to mirror the nation with respect to the frequency composition and severity of their cycles. Specialized regions appear more volatile in their behavior when compared to the nation. The effect of regional growth on cyclical behavior is found to be ambiguous
