Wood, of Stratified Random Samples in a Land Use Study, Annals Assn. of Amer. Geogrs., Vol. 45, 1955, pp. 350367. Wood's paper deals primarily with estinmates of area from samiple-based data. The application of sampling to geomorphology, with stress on techniques of statistical mainipulation, is discussed by Arthur N. Strahler in Statistical Analysis in Geomorphic Research, Journal of Geology, Vol. 62, 1954, pp. 1-25. Discussions of applicable sampling methods will be found in J. M. Blaut: Micro-Regional Sample Surveys in Applied Agricultural Geography: A Preliminary Statement, Proceedings of the Louisiana Academy of Sciences, Vol. 17, 1954, pp. 100-106. The present paper deals with one phase of the subject: the application of representative probability sampling, in combination with microgeography, to a problem in applied regional geography which as yet seems not to have been solved by any other means. While the method-termed for convenience the micro-regional sample survey--is discussed here in relation to a specific type of problem, it is clearly adaptable to somewhat wider use. It may, in fact, illustrate the basic approach needed to quantify regional geography and generalize microgeography
