Scientists and the Public in Late-Nineteenth-Century Russia

This paper examines the historically unprecedented reciprocal relationship between science and civil society in late Imperial Russia, focusing on the period from 1855 to 1905. It argues that the pursuit of theoretical and applied natural sciences came to be seen as contributing both ideologically and practically to the reform and renewal of Russian public life, and to the construction of the institutions and social networks of emerging civil society. Within those same structures, Russian scientists increasingly pursued their own professional agendas and social duties. These developments in turn had significant impact on the evolution of scientific disciplines, career patterns, and the formation of scientists' professional and social identities. Since these processes can be most easily traced within a specific locale and discipline, the paper concludes with a case study of the interactions between bacteriologists and elements of Russian civil society in the 1880s. Scientists and the interested public, particularly in southern Russia (now Ukraine), interacted in the civic realm to exploit this new science for their own purposes in the name of building the material bases for a modern society. In this instance, the extension of civil society in the late nineteenth century had produced the civic institutions and sphere of critical discourse that allowed their varying interests to be mediated independently of the state
