HIS DISCUSSION is limited almost entirely to the rural community. I am not sure that the term has much meaning when applied to urban situations, and in any case I know very little about cities. Furthermore, so much of social life is carried on at the community level that it is impossible to discuss all the phases, so I have selected those aspects of the subject which appear most significant to me. Anydiscussion of communitytrends necessarily will be greatly influenced by the specific connotations that are given to the term community, which is not an easy one to define; all in all, community is one of the most ambiguous words in sociological literature. For this reason, it is highly important to set forth precisely the sense in which the term is used in the following discussion. An examination of the literature reveals two principal senses in which community is used, both of them having very good authority in the Latin derivation. One of these usages merely refers to qualities of solidarity or togetherness; the second definitely denotes a body of people in a given locality.
