This paper reviews the historical development and scientific contribution over two centuries of the 'Geographical-Cartographical Institute' in Gotha, Thuringia (now part of the GDR), founded by J. G. J. (Justus) Perthes in 1785. Though probably best known in the English-speaking world for its association with August Petermann and the periodical Petermanns Geographischen Mitteilungen, the influence of the publishing house upon geography, cartography and exploration has been substantial. In 1952 the firm was split by the then owner's move to West Germany, the establishment of the 'Geographische Verlagsanstalt Justus Perthes' in Darmstadt in 1953, and the renaming of the GDR publisher as the VEB Hermann Haack Geographisch-Kartographische Anstalt Gotha
