Viagra (sidenafil) appears to be a safe effective oral treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). In one study improved erection was experienced in 56% of those taking a 25 mg dose 77% of those taking 50 mg and 84% of patients given 100 mg compared with 25% of men who received a placebo. These improvements occurred in men with organic psychogenic and mixed causes of ED. There is concern that the easy availability of Viagra may lead to a neglect of cause-related treatment approaches. In a high proportion of patients especially those over 40 years of age ED is due to problems such as diabetes atherosclerosis heart disease high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. An estimated 25% of erectile failure is caused by medication. Where appropriate counseling and sex therapy should be attempted before drug treatment is initiated
