Reactions to the introduction of Viagra illustrate the extent and impact of the problem of erectile dysfunction (ED). The emotional and social consequences of ED can be devastating both for affected men and their sexual partners. The risk of an episode of sexual failure can lead many men to avoid intimate relationships. In light of this tragedy the flippancy of current mass media coverage and social discussions of Viagra is puzzling. Of potential concern however is the impact of further extending the power of the medical profession to decide who should and should not receive this drug. Such judgments are likely to be made more on the basis of dominant social values than clinical criteria
