Early and Later Experiences as Determinants of Adult Behaviour

It is now generally accepted that early experiences play a vital part in the formation of personality structure which in turn affects behaviour throughout life. However, the earlier view of some psychoanalysts that one could predict most of subsequent behaviour from a knowledge of the earliest months or years of experience is recognized now as only partly true-just as are the over-statements of some social or cultural relativists who maintain that any sort of behaviour is possible if the society provides cultural sanctions or social roles for it, even behaviour previously thought to be biologically rooted. It is important now to study more precisely what experiences determine behaviour under what conditions
