This research aims to discuss the role of the visual representations of Maria Quitéria de Jesus (1792?-1853) in the formation of the Brazilian national imaginary.The first chapter discusses the genesis of the iconography of the combatant in the British traveling artists' production.The two following chapterswhich form the first part of the workdiscuss the contexts of production and circulation of images of other heroines that emerged in the 19th century, such as the volunteer in the war against Paraguay (1864-1870), Jovita Alves Feitosa (1848-1867) and the "martyr" of the war of Independence, Joana Angélica de Jesus (1761-1822).The fourth chapter analyzes the process of institutionalization of the civic cult of Maria Quitéria between the end of the Second Reign (1840-1889) and the First Republic (1889-1930), based on a set of actions carried out by the Instituto Histórico Geográfico Brasileiro, the Instituto Geográfico e Histórico da Bahia and the Museu Paulista.Finally, the fifth chapter analyzes the re-elaborations of Maria Quitéria's memory since her centenary of death, in 1953.In this period, there was a spreading of the image of the combatant through the articulation between the government and civil society sectors
