Recent excavations at the Kin 'Atsá site and other early Navajo sites in northwestern New Mexico indicate the utility of the Dinetah phase, originally defined by Hester (1962) in describing Navajo components dating between approximately A.D. 1350 and 1700. These studies indicate that components distinctive of early Navajo culture can be distinguished from those of other cultural groups and that the Navajo may have manufactured their own ceramics prior to the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Evidence in support of Hester's Dinetah phase is presented
