Shell Middens, Paleoecology, and Prehistory

Prehistoric shell middens from Estero Morua, near Puerto Peñasco on the Gulf of California, are examined as a reflection of the ecology of the estero at approximately A.D. 1200. A measure of the relative abundance of the molluscs reveals a prehistoric subsistence pattern based on the exploitation of rocky substrate and sandy tidal flat fauna. This contrasts with the habitats extant today and suggests a basic change in the ecology of the estuary during the last 700 years
