Avifauna from the Curtis Site, Southeastern Arizona

A total of 43 individual bird bones and three partial bird skeletons representing 19 species were recovered from excavations at the Curtis Site in Graham County, southeastern Arizona. Although there is a wide variety of species represented in a relatively small sample of bone, most of the species still occur in the site region and suggest little or no ecological changes from A.D. 1300 until today. Historic records, however, indicate the area has undergone severe vegetational changes in the last century altering its ecology from a dominant grassland to a shrubland. Additional evidence should be sought to verify the results of faunal analysis in reconstructing prehistoric ecology
