Rudolf Gerharz has been making a detailed comparative study of African metal tools, ethnographic as well as archaeological, across the continent. He is preparing a corpus. The present note is the result of fruitful collaboration with Dirk Spennemann, formerly a student of European prehistory and now engaged in the archaeology of the South Pacific. Both authors are at the Seminar fur Vor- und Frühgeschichte of the University of Frankfurt-am-Main.
