The nuclear power issue in Ireland the role of the Irish anti‐nuclear movement

In the 1970s a decision was made to generate electricity in Ireland by building at least one nuclear power station. Throughout the 1970s and into the early 1980s the implementation of this policy proved to be increasingly difficult. What began as a straightforward decision became a serious political controversy involving each of the major Irish political parties and a wide range of pressure groups. This article examines the political conflict associated with the implementation of nuclear energy policy in Ireland. It does so by focusing first upon the initial formulation of policy and then upon the opposition that developed to it. It traces the history of that opposition and the responses that were produced by the major political parties
