The essays in this volume fulfill a special pioneer role in opening up the study of family history in Latin America. Their double utility lies in encouraging research in a new area as well as in bringing new insights to our understanding of historical changes in the family in Western Europe, in the United States, and in contemporary developing societies. In the ensuing discussion I will examine some of the points raised in the essays in this volume in relationship to the state of our knowledge of family history in other parts of the world (Laslett, 1977; Hareven, 1971, 1977). The Latin American essays in this issue stimulate comparative thought both by their individual contributions on specific aspects of family behavior, and by the guest editors ’ attempt to offer an over-all framework for the interpretation of the relationship between the family and social change in Latin America. Ongoing research on the history of the family in the United States and in Western Europe over the past decades has revolved around three major areas: household struc-ture, the family cycle of domestic groups, and kinship. More recently, research has also extended to the entire life course, as it relates to family transitions and to the timing of demographic and family events
