Perceived as being seriously weakened by the post-World War II social and political developments, the traditional family?presumably the bedrock of American culture?has become a high-priority issue on the New Right?s social agenda. While harboring deep mistrust of government, most notably because it seemingly usurps traditional authority, the New Right is urging the government to redefine, by law, the American family. This paper shows that the family values rhetoric and politics deployed by the New Right are fraught with contradictions and tensions
