This article compares two key instances in the (re)-configuration of post-conflict justice: the creation of an international criminal justice after World War Two (the Nuremberg trials) and the recent development of Transitional Justice. In both these contexts a special relationship is established between professional practices and academic knowledge. It is this relationship – widely ignored by research to date – which to a large extent conditions the type of institutional response to the question of mass crimes
